Richard Rose

Professor Richard Rose has pioneered the study of comparative politics and public policy in Europe as Director of the Centre for the Study of Public Policy at the University of Strathclyde. He is a Visiting Professor at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute. His current research focuses on the challenges of Representing Europeans (Oxford U. Press, 2015). It contrasts the capacity of individuals in their role as national citizens to hold their government to account, while lacking this role as EU citizens,. Concurrently, in the European Council national prime ministers are accountable for treaty obligations signed by their predecessors and for collective decisions taken by 27 prime ministers accountable to 27 different national electorates. Rose’s 40 plus books cover problems of national political systems from Ireland to Russia and the American White House. He has given seminars in 26 EU member states and his writings have been translated into 18 languages. For his achievements, Rose has received honorary doctorates from the European University Institute, and the University of Orebro, Sweden. In 2009 he was awarded the Sir Isaiah Berlin Lifetime Achievement Prize from the Political Studies Association of the United Kingdom.
