Michael O’Flaherty

Michael O’Flaherty is the Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). This Agency is the EU’s independent centre of excellence providing EU institutions and Member States with assistance and expertise on fundamental rights ( Before becoming head of FRA, Professor Michael O’Flaherty was Professor of Human Rights Law and Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland, Galway. O’Flaherty was a member of the UK Foreign Office’s advisory bodies on freedom of expression and the prevention of torture. He was also on the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs’ human rights advisory committee. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and sits on the advisory boards of numerous human rights groups and journals internationally. O’Flaherty was Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission until November 2013. Previously, he held a number of senior UN posts in the field and was Vice-Chairperson of the UN Human Rights Committee.
