Kersti Kaljulaid is the fifth and current President of Estonia. From 1999 to 2002, she was Prime Minister Mart Laar’s Economic Advisor. During this time her duties included liaising with the Estonian central bank and the Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Office of the Prime Minister. She also managed the PM’s relationship with the International Monetary Fund. From 2004 to 2016 Kaljulaid was a Member of the European Court of Auditors. In this role, she was responsible for the financial audit of research and development funds in the budget of the European Union between 2002 and 2004. Amongst other roles, Kaljulaid was also the auditor of the Galileo project of the European Union.
