Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires left to Portugal in 1956 to attend Lisbon University of Sciences. In June 1974 Pires was elected member of the Parliament of Cape Verde and designated on July 6, 1975 as the first Prime Minister of the independent nation of Cape Verde. In September 2000, he announced his candidature to the Presidency of the Republic of Cape Verde. He was elected President on February 25, 2001. He is the third President of the Republic of Cape Verde. Pedro Pires was awarded the 2011 Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. The prize was awarded in recognition of Pires role in making Cape Verde a “model of democracy, stability and increased prosperity”.
