José Manuel Durão Barroso’s political career began in 1980 when he joined the Portuguese Social Democratic Party (PSD). He was named President of the party in 1999 and re-elected three times. During the same period, he served as Vice President of the European People’s Party. In April 2002, he was elected Prime Minister of Portugal. He remained in office until July 2004 when he became President of the European Commission. He was re-elected for another five-year term by the European Parliament in September 2009.

Mr. Barroso holds a Master in Political Science and European Affairs from the University of Geneva, served as Head of International Relations Department of Lusíada University, Portugal, from1995-1999 and was Visting Professor at Georgetown University, USA, from 1996-1998.
